Every AKC breed of dog has a "standard". The standard is what provides us with the guidelines by
which all Akitas should look, move and act. If we don’t follow the standard, eventually we have a dog that
doesn’t resemble our breed.
The AKC is the governing body (in the United States) that keeps the genealogies on pedigree dogs and
governs dog events (conformation, obedience and field trials). However, the pedigree dog, is governed by a
breed club. In our case the parent club is the Akita Club of America "ACA", of which our club is a
member. The ACA makes all the decisions regarding the Akita, while the AKC gives us guidelines we need to
follow.
As members of the ACA and/or H.O.T. Akita Club we are required to sign a "code of ethics" and
abide by them. The H.O.T. Akita Club code of ethics requires responsible ownership and breeding practices.
The H.O.T. Akita Club supports:
- education
- Genetic Screening
- Canine Good Citizen testing "C.G.C." (providing testing, with prior notice at our fun matches)
- two fun matches a year (conformation and obedience)
- rescue
- regional specialties (dog shows with only Akitas);
- AKC titles (ie. CH, CD, ROM, CGC, etc.) and
- newsletter
Club meetings are held on the third Tuesday of every month
